attempting to forge his own career and recently began singing with the tommy dorsey orchestra. >> he sang all of his dads songs. >> fox played trumpet with the orchestra. fox files tracked him down to his home in maine. >> he just wanted to be like him. >> what made the younger sinatra such an appealing target for keenan? >> because he was slight of build so if he tried to run we could contain him without hurting him. and then his father was well-known for being a tough guy and hanging out with the mob and i thought he could handle the stress. so i started writing a business plan for this affair and i called it the mplan of operatio just like i would if i was doing a real estate deal. >> his new plan of operation would require some feed money. but keenan was broke as a result of a car accident. >> disabled me pretty

significantly. i got addicted to pain medication. i was already an alcoholic. so my thinking was not very clear. >> barry keenan may have been down and out but torin was flushed with cash. he and his singing partner had a number one hit the previous summer with their song bird singing. he approached him with his new business plan. >> told him not to say anything until i finished my presentation. >> it was here under the statue and on the campus of university of southern california where he was a student studying graphics that they would discuss the plan to make fast cash. >> we had done business deals together. this was in my mind another opportunity. >> did he tell you he thought you were crazy? >> yeah. >> what did you say? >> i said i am crazy why don't you loan me $500 i won't bother you and let you get to class.

>> he gave you more than one check. >> he gave me three or four. >> he used the money to hire help with the kidnapping plan. the first call went to his mother's ex-boyfriend a 32-year-old house painter named john irwin. >> he had fallen on hard times i set him and his family up with housing and a car. >> he owed you one? >> he owed me one. i called him in. he reluctantly agreed to go along. he discovered sinatra jr. was appearing at the state fair in 1963. he and irwin flew to phoenix with the plan to snatch him there. realizing they made key mistakes including leaving fingerprints on a phone they decided to abort. >> went home. john said forget about it. >> hell bent on pulling it off keenan recruited another friend a 23-year-old shellfish diver

known as joe handler to help with his plan. he talked irwin into rejoining the plan and went to ambassador hotel. the day they picked friday november 22nd, 1963, the same day president john f. kennedy was assassinated in cdallas. >> john was weeping and completely out of it. joe was devastated as well and they were all done with the kidnappin kidnapping. >> it wasn't long before keenan was thinking about his next move. >> you still needed your money. >> yes. >> the hardest part was to get joe or john to even answer my phone calls but eventually i preva prevailed. i knew if i mentioned anything about the abduction that joe would walk off. i said let's go to lake tahoe and look for jobs. >> in early december they drove to lake tahoe which straddles

nevada and california. they drove pass paris club. there is frank sinatra junior with the tommy dorsey orchestra. and joe almost hit me. i can't say on this interview the expletives that he came out with. he was very upset. you didn't want to upset joe. i said don't worry about it it's just a coincidence. eventually he calmed down. then we ran out of money. so we had to kidnap frank sinatra junior to get back to la. >> around 9:30 p.m. on the freezing night keenan and a very nervous joe crept up to the room and inside frank junior and trem peter john fox had just finished dinner before that night's show. >> raised my hand to knock on the door and joe yells no. no. i looked at him and said that's why we are here.

i knocked on the door and frank sinatra said come in. >> said he had a package for frank jr. walked in put the box down on the floor and when he straightened up took his glove off and he had a small revolver in his hand. >> cocked it in front of junior's face, and i said nobody move, nobody will get hurt. >> at that point he made us go lie down on the floor. tied upjohn fox and i said joe would you take mr. sinatra down to the car? he did. >> han sell wanted to hit me over the head with his rifle. he wanted me to be out of commission, but keenan said he didn't want to hurt anybody, which i was grateful for. >> after hustling sinatra into the back seat of their car and

blindfolding him keenan and anceler started the drive back to los angeles in a blinding snowstorm. >> i ran down stairs and banged on the door of the manager of the motel and i convinced him that he needed to call the sheriff's office and about five minutes they were there. >> the police quickly set up road blocks to try and insnare the kidnaper. >> we did give him a sleeping pill and whiskey. i knew we would eventually run into a roadblock. i said to frank jr., there may be a lot of gun play if you do your part there's no reason for it you are going to be sleeping off a drunk. >> you made it through roadblocks that were set up to specifically find frank sinatra jr.>> we got to la and the rest is history. >> coming up the whole thing was strange. thing... or you can get out there and actually share something.

19-year-old frank sin gnat draw jr. in the back seat the kidnapers arrived at their hideout in the early night 1963. >> they were at the los angeles sub he shall of kanoga park. >> why there? >> i was looking for a place that didn't have neighbors nearby that i could keep frank jr. while we were getting the deal. >> a stunned and frantic sinatra abandoned the robin and the 7 hoods production and flew to nevada sunday night. a snowstorm prevented him from getting to lake tahoe so he established his own command center at the mace hotel in reno. the fbi was called in and this mandy nelson was put in charge of the investigation. >> i had two questions i had to ask him right then. one was, who young frank do this just to get publicity?

he said dean, he would never do this to his mother. the next thing i asked him, do you think the mob has had any connections with the kidnapping. he said, no. >> on monday morning in los angeles my mother actress barbara rush arrived on the warner brother's lot to resume filming robin and the seven hoods. >> the choreographer came out and said something happened mr. sinatra had to leave and we are not going to finish the scene today. this was a musical number. i said could you do it today? he said no because frank jr. had been kidnapped. i said, he has been kidnapped? frank sinatra's son has been kidnapped. you must be joking. >> that morning crazed kidnaper barry keenan decided to drive nearly 500 miles back to lake tahoe to check out of his hotel and get rid of any lingering

evidence. frank sinatra jr. remained at the hideout with ansler and keenan. >> was he mistreated? >> no. >> both john and joe assured frank sane gninatra jr. as long cooperated he would keep them save from the higher ups. during that time they became close all three of them. >> 22 hours after his son was kidnapped frank sinatra got a call from the kidnapers who only told him junior was safe. at 11 in the morning they called again. he was instructed to go to a pay phone in carson city, nevada and await yet another call. dean nelson drove out to the gas station with sinatra. >> i kept telling them once we got them on the phone i want you

to keep them on the phone as long as you can. >> to phratrace the call. >> they were able to trace the phone from los angeles and he did talk to frank to find out he was safe. they told us then that they wanted 240,000 dollars. >> sinatra was told the next call would come that night at ex-wife nancy a's home in bellaire, california. they chartered a plane back to la. in the coming days they turned the home into an fbi command center. tina who was 15 years old told fox files exclusively about the familiar lace ordeal and what it was like having the fbi living in their home. >> they were so poised and ever polite, but they would not indulge in conversation and how they would jump when the phone would ring. we freeze, they jump. it was one moment to the next.

the whole thing was surreal and strange. >> what was frank sinatra like? was he composed, frantic? >> he was calm. he talked to the kidnapers on each call. he would ask questions. he answered questions properly. he conducted himself really well. >> i found him pensive and quiet and economic with his words. he barely spoke. didn't eat much. none of us did. >> then sinatra got the call he was waiting for. the kidnapers told him to go to a texaco station near bellaire. >> it was at that point they told us the next call would be taken by the person carrying the money. >> one of his fbi agents made the ransom drop around 11:00 p.m. that night. a series of phone calls led the agent to a parking lot filled with school buses where he left the bag that contained 240,000

dollars between two buses. >> were the fbi not keeping an eye on the suitcase smou? >> apparently they could not get close enough to it. he was ordered to go in drop the ransom money and they told him after he left then they would drop young frank off so that he would be released. >> ansler and keenan were watching the drop but he suddenly panicked. >> he saw the fbi guys and high tailed it over the fence so i had to go pick up the money ourselves. >> we never did cover them coming out of that parking lot with ransom money. >> they got away? >> got away at that point. >> following a call from keenan john irwin dropped sinatra jr. off at the 405 freeway at bellaire around 2 in the morning. >> young frank started to walk. every time he would see a cargo by he would duck into the bushes. he thought maybe the kidnapers

you can't give it back to us. >> after writing this letter to fbi director j edgar hoover ellison was allowed to keep the watch. the day after sinatra's birthday the case was cracked wide open when irwin confessed his involvement to his brother within hours keenan and ansler were also in custody. >> three men were arrested including barry keenan a 23-year-old unemployed sales rep. most of the money small bills was recovered. >> besides giving money for the not teen torrance was never charged. >> when their trial began in 1964 the defense took the strategy of blaming the victim to dizzyying new heights. >> it was keenan who defied their defense. >> every time i talked to a lawyer it was are you sure this wasn't a publicity stunt?

everybody was sure it was a publicity stunt. that gave me theidea. >> all three had near own lawyers john irwin's attorney was the flamboyant gladys root known for wearing outlandish hats to court. >> she was a piece of work. >> yes, she was. >> in her opening statement she said the whole thing was a hoax made purely for publicity. in this transcript she labeled it an advertising scheme and a planned agreement. the sinatra family was outraged. >> i remember mostly being offended and stunned the lawyer gladys root. she knew once you ring that bell it's running. wrung. >> keenan's lawyer and his attorney blamed sinatra. it is suspect from start to finish. >> it was on the front page of the papers and the lead news

kidnapping a hoax. no realization how much grief it would cause frank jr.>> it was really violating. the nearest thing to rape. it was very bad. >> but the jersey didn't buy it. >> after a six-week striel we were found guilty. we were sentenced to life plus 75 years, john who was not in the physical kidnapping was sentenced to 16 years and 8 months. >> none of those sentences were actually served out? >> no. >> the story takes another strange twist when a series of evaluations and appeals got their sentences drastically cut so they were all back on the streets by 1968. barry keenan would go on to become a very successful and sober real estate developer. >> how did that happen? >> dean torrence comes back in the picture and when i got out he ran a fundraiser party for me. i used that money to get back

into the real estate business. >> he tried to make a movie about the kidnapping saying son of sam law which prohibits criminals from profiting from their crime. >> the fact that you might think of barry keenan and his movie revictimizing frank sinatra, jr. that's when the first amendment is most important. >> keenan's lawyer took the case all of the way to the california supreme court which overturned the law in 2002. >> there are times when the speech is unpopular but under the first amendment we are going to defend free speech. >> almost five decades later frank sinatra jr. who declined our request for interview is still forming at age 68. john irwin and joe ancelsler ar deceased and barry keenan is 72 years old. >> you are not the same barry as you were then? >> i may ab little crazy but i am not insane.

female marines would do. >> on deploy in ramadi the lives of these two marines changed forever. >> we were clearing the roads some insurgents were watching us from a rooftop a little ways away. when we got to a certain point they detonated an iud. i was knocked unconscious thrown a couple feet. when i woke up i was like please be on the end of the leash, don't be hurt. rex hurt his right shoulder so he had a hard time walking. we both from post traumatic stress from it. >> megan suffered a traumatic brain injury. after recovering she retired from the marines and moved back home from new york. >> i tried to adopt rex ever since i was getting out of the marin

marines. unfortunately for me but good for the marine corps she was able to go back to work. >> life is 8-10 years. >> a form dog handler and is military working dog coordinator in lack land. >> they were moving out of places like iraq and afghanistan and other places in the middle east. it took off working time off of their longevity. >> congress passed roby's law allowing suitable working dogs to be adopted. >> prior to the year 2000 dogs weren't adopted out, most were euthanized. 800 dogs have been adopted out. >> 90 percent are adopted by their former handlers. she and rex were reunited but not as easy as she hoped. >> it would say not adoptable because he's an attack dog. used to be aggressive at the

vet. >> they got support from chuck schumer's office to assist in the adoption. >> i want to be proactive in letting people know our back story and i am willing to take care of them. he is a really good dog. >> rex was officially retired at camp pendleton and he was coming home with her. >> we have been through so much together and that's why it was important for me to have him after and adopt him and give him a life that he deserved outside of the kennel. he has been working for 11 years and that's old for a dog. he did three deployments so i think that he deserves the best life that he can while he's retired and that's what i am trying to give him now. >> love you, rex. >> are you ready? >> that's next on "fox files." this holiday, share everything.
